What motivates you?

What do you attribute your success to?

Do you think that Motivation is directly related to Success?

I interviewed a successful Audit Director, for a major US City, recently and asked him these very questions.  Here is an excerpt from that interview:

Question:

"What motivates you?"

Answer:

"I am personally motivated by:
  • a new goal
  • a fresh look at an old goal
  • a goal that will leverage my experience and knowledge
  • a goal that strengthens my financial position
  • a goal that provides an opportunity to solve a problem
  • establishing goals for my department that motivate staff
  • observing excitement of other goal oriented people"

Question:

"What do you attribute your success to?"

Answer:
"My success is directly linked to:
  • achieving my goals through hard work
  • dedicated and committed to accomplishing my goals
  • counting on God's blessings as an integral part of the recipe for success
  • goal oriented and supportive partner, who continually motivates me"
What great answers he gave!

To my surprise, I noticed that his answer for the "motivation" question continually had the word "goal" in it.
Motivation is defined as "goal-directed behavior."

My second surprise was the answer he gave forthe"success" question.  Action words such as, achieve and accomplish, were part of his answer.  S
uccess is defined as "achievement of a goal."

It was almost as if he had seen my notes before I even asked the questions.

Motivation is Linked to Success

Most motivational articles and books indirectly link motivation to success, but stop short of clearly saying it.  This interview with a very successful businessman, in his own right, confirms that Motivation is definitely linked to Success.

Without motivation, success is mediocre, at best.  No one wants to pass through life only having achieved only mediocrity.

Motivation requires that you believe in yourself and think BIG.  There is a great motivational book called, "The Magic of Thinking Big," by David Schwartz.
